Rwamatamu isn’t just another African coffee processing station. Behind the project are husband and wife Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laetitia, who founded the farm in 2015 with a clear goal—to create jobs for the community around the town of Kibuye while growing exceptional coffee. Today, their daughter Bernice and her husband Luke are gradually taking over the station, and it is thanks to them that the Irish roastery Calendar Coffee was able to secure a direct purchase agreement. Last year, they visited the farm in person and laid the groundwork for a long-term partnership. Bourbon beans grow at an altitude between 1,600 and 2,000 meters on volcanic soil overlooking Lake Kivu.

The washed processing method gives the coffee a clean and bright profile—in espresso, this translates to a syrupy, full-bodied cup with lively citrus acidity. The June 2025 harvest is the first of two lots that Calendar Coffee will offer from this year’s crop. And the fact that Rwamatamu took second place in Best of Rwanda speaks for itself.
